Here I am with another entry into my cycling dairy.
Shifting with the Seasons
Ever since the return of hot summers, my rides have shifted to the evenings and nights. I’ve been meaning to start an early morning routine, but so far, that plan hasn’t taken off. Honestly, I think it’s because my body is too sore from the night rides to summon the energy for an early start. Maybe a rest day will help reset the cycle—if and when that happens. Fingers crossed.
Pushing to 30 KM
With the heat setting in, I’ve been aiming to make 30 KM rides my new normal. It’s a definite challenge, considering my physique, fitness level, and BMI. But 20 KM rides have started feeling incomplete, leaving me wanting more. Then again, for a cycling enthusiast, any distance often feels like just a warm-up.
A Breezy Start
I kicked off the ride around 9:15 PM. It was a classic summer evening—warm but breezy, with the wind whispering through the trees and across the roads. The pre-ride setup was nearly perfect: gear checked, spares in place, lights working fine. The emphasis, of course, is on “nearly.”
A Missing Essential
The ride was smooth until about the 12 KM mark when I stopped for my usual water break. I typically take two breaks during a 30 KM ride—once between 10–15 KM and again around 20–25 KM. If it’s particularly hot, a third break isn’t out of the question.
As I reached for my bottle, I discovered the cage was empty—I had forgotten to bring water. Right then, I knew the rest of the ride was going to be a grind.
The Final Push And Reflections
By the time I crossed 20 KM, dehydration had set in. I began scanning the roadside for a shop. Eventually, one showed up like an oasis. I grabbed a cold drink, quenched my thirst, and was able to finish the rest of the ride.
Lesson learned: a perfect ride demands perfect preparation, and that includes hydration—especially in the summer. Still, every ride teaches something, and this one was no exception. On to the next adventure, hopefully with a water bottle in tow.
